The Kyiv Review

The project represents the capital’s narrative. In the form of an interview, we record Kyiv in all its manifestations: from the activity of civil society and the development of cultural spaces to the position of Ukraine on the international arena.

A separate focus is the study of the city using urban practices. Our team sets itself the goal of understanding the meanings that will fill Kyiv in order to understand and broadcast its identity.

New interviews

Olena Brychenko

Co-founder of Food Culture

Especially for Easter, we spoke with anthropologist Olena Braychenko to find out how this day is celebrated today and to delve into the peculiarities of the holiday. After reading the interview, you will find out whether social networks have changed Easter, and you will also get an answer to the question of why even non-religious people honor this bright holiday.

Evgeny Magda

Director of the Institute of World Politics

In order to understand what critical thinking is and how to develop it, we talked to the famous political scientist Yevgeny Magda, who helped us put all the dots on the “and” in this matter.

Nikita Kadan

Artist & Curator

In the interview, we talked about the Khmit phenomenon, the inadmissibility of a single “correct” ideology, and the ability of Ukrainian politicians to change their shoes in the air. Our conversation will give you answers to the questions of why Ukraine needs de-Sovietization, not decommunization, as well as how the crisis can be a source of new opportunities.

Ivan Primachenko

Founder of Prometheus

In the interview, you will learn about the skills relevant for career growth today and in the near future, the benefits of the Stanford program “Emerging leaders”, as well as the changes necessary for reforming school and higher education in Ukraine.

Serhii Korsunskyi

Director of the Diplomatic Academy at the MFA

In the interview, you will learn the principles by which Ukrainian diplomats are trained abroad, as well as why the work of a diplomat is always about great trust and responsibility. Among other things, we talked about the motives of the current administration of the White House, tried to determine the objective reasons for Germany’s desire to complete Nord Stream-2, and also learned what Israel’s experience can teach us.

Residents of the city

Lana Izbytska

Vegan

Lana works in post-production for one of the largest TV channels in the country, and in her spare time she takes photographs. However, her real superpower lies in her veganism and careful attitude towards all living things. Together we broached a topic that you casually return to again and again – during every breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Oleksandr Vyazovska

The creator

In the interview, Sasha shared with us her perception of Kyiv, her favorite institutions and places. You will find out what makes Reitarska so special, what our generation “sins”, and you will also hear first-hand about the project that will rediscover the city and its residents.

Oleksiy Ponomaryov

Photographer

Oleksiy studied to be an architect in Kharkiv and had no idea that photography would become his main job. Today he lives in Kyiv and takes photos for Vogue Ukraine, Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE and Marie Claire. Annabel was born in Berlin, spent part of her childhood in Chernivtsi, and finished school in Kyiv. Her first exhibition “Urban Nightscape” took place this year, which reveals to us the nature of the city on a visual and emotional level: what we all feel, but cannot always express.

“We lived in someone else’s imperial narrative for a very long time. It’s time to form your own narrative, and not just be a carrier of other people’s ideas.”
